What to do if I have an accident

Driving slow and safe, wearing a proper helmet and not racing are the most important rules you should obey during your road trip across Vietnam. Unfortunately, you are never 100% safe on a motorcycle and it is wise to know what to do in case something bad happens.

There are accidents that include falls but in the end both parties get up and keep minding their own business. I have seen some of those in Vietnam and that’s what you should do too. If you do not cause anyone a serious harm, simply apologize and keep going.

On the other hand, there are also accidents when someone can gets seriously hurt and you should know what to do. First of all, do not even think an ambulance would come. As much as I admire how fast Vietnam as a country is developing, ambulance service is still something you just cannot rely on. Ambulances in Vietnam are slow and poorly equipped. Forget about all the emergency numbers, they are worthless.

If you ever need an emergency help, the best thing you can do is to ask the first person you see for help. As every Vietnamese person is a part of the community and as Vietnamese people are always willing to help, you will for sure be quickly escorted to the nearest hospital and provided necessary medical aid.
