Where to begin your trip in Vietnam

There are three main centers in Vietnam where I suggest you start your journey. Not only getting here will always be easy, you will also be able to buy a motorcycle in any of these places:

A) In the north – Hanoi
B) In the south – Ho Chi Minh City
C) In central Vietnam – Da Nang, Hoi An or Hue

The first two options are the easiest and the preference of those two might be just based on surrounding regions, local climate, or price of the tickets. Both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City has backpacker areas where people come to start and finish their journey and it usually takes just hours to a few days to get a good motorcycle.

The third option can be a bit more tricky but definitely provides its benefits as well. Central part of Vietnam is a great place to start your journey if you don’t want to or are not able to ride across the entire country. Local cities provide less crowded spots to test the bike, the weather is less extreme and Ho Chi Minh Road or Hai Van Pass is just around the corner. And as Da Nang is becoming a major international airport with connecting flights from Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur, getting here is cheap and simple too.

The tricky part of starting a trip in central Vietnam is that there are less people selling their motorcycles so you might have to be a bit more patient as it might take up to a week to find a good one. Another thing is that you should get ready to travel a bit. Hoi An being 25 km (15 miles) away from Da Nang and Hue 100 km (60 miles) from Da Nang you might have to use a local bus or train to get to a place where you will buy your motorcycle.
