Visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the Presidential Palace and the One Pillar Pagoda, then the tranquil courtyards of the Temple of Literature. Lunch is bun cha at Huong Lien — the very table Obama once shared. The Museum of Ethnology opens a window onto Vietnam's 54 ethnic groups, and the day closes at Cafe Giang, birthplace of egg coffee.

Begin at the sombre Hoa Lo Prison, then trace the colonial architecture of the French Quarter. Lose an hour in Dong Xuan Market, or hunt for silk in the Old Quarter lanes. A farewell Hanoi lunch of cha ca — sizzling turmeric fish — or crab spring rolls brings the city chapter to a close.

Transfer from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay (around 3.5 hours). Board your intimate 5★ boutique cruise — just 19 cabins — and glide past limestone karsts, hidden lagoons and floating villages. After a seafood lunch, kayak, swim or visit a pearl farm; as the sun drops, sunset cocktails give way to a Vietnamese dinner aboard. Optional night squid fishing or stargazing from the deck.

Chapter II The Northern Frontier Days 8–14 · Cao Bang · Ban Gioc · Dong Van · Ha Giang

Leaving your Hanoi hotel around 8:30am, watch the metropolis dissolve into rolling countryside on the seven-hour drive to Ban Gioc, with coffee stops and scenic pauses along the way. Tonight you stay in an old village on the Chinese border, home to the Tay people, and share a family-style lunch drawn from the garden — chicken, pork, fish and seasonal vegetables among friends.

A morning hike of about an hour leads into Nguom Ngao, one of the region's largest caves, its stalagmites and stalactites shaped over millennia. At midday — when the light falls just right and the water runs fullest — you reach Ban Gioc Waterfall for its finest photography. The afternoon lingers at a rural viewpoint and among Tay homes, close to their customs and traditions, before a second night in the village.

The first stop is a craft village of incense-makers and blacksmiths, where families work beyond the rice and corn fields. Along the road a man tends his buffalo, a woman in a bamboo hat works her garden — and you may be waved in for a drink and easy conversation about life here. Overnight in Cao Bang, a city full of character.

A road trip across the Cao Bang plateau into Ha Giang territory and onto the off-beaten loop toward Dong Van. Winding roads lead through Meo Vac, long home to the H'mong — and if the timing is right, its Sunday market is in full, busy colour. Hike among the rocky peaks to the viewpoints of Ma Pi Leng Pass and the Nho Que river. Tonight you stay in Dong Van's cosy old quarter, its French-era and Chinese houses lit by red lanterns.

Dong Van

Dong Van

Dong Van's historic centre is surprisingly snug for a town so far from everything — two-storey houses with yin-and-yang roofs, now small shops and restaurants around the square. At the Dong Van market the H'mong, Tay, Nung and Hoa gather in their most colourful dress to trade everything from cloth to livestock, with street games and barbers at work — a portrait of frontier life at its most vivid.

The road continues toward Ha Giang city for the night. Depending on the season, terraced rice paddies ripple across the hillsides; a walk into a hillside village reveals a small settlement seemingly conjured from nowhere. Overnight in the city.
